New Resource: Hemp Derived Products and Protecting the Health of Wisconsinites

The Substance Use Section of the Wisconsin Public Health Association (WPHA) has released a new resource to help communities better understand the rapidly evolving landscape of hemp‑derived products. This concise two-page guide highlights key public health concerns associated with THC use, outlines emerging policy considerations, and offers practical talking points for parents and guardians. It also includes actionable strategies that community coalitions can use to support prevention, education, and safer environments for youth and families.

The release of this resource aligns with the purpose of the newly formed Substance Use Section of WPHA: to bring greater awareness to—and build skills around—the topic areas of alcohol, tobacco, drug use, prevention, and harm reduction. This hemp resource is just the beginning. The section looks forward to developing additional tools, fostering collaboration, and supporting communities across Wisconsin as they navigate substance related challenges.

Recent federal changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have shifted 75 percent of administrative costs to states, creating a $69.2 million funding need for Wisconsin. Without legislative action before the end of the session, the state could face penalties of up to $205 million and risk disruptions to benefits.

Speakers emphasized that FoodShare is both a critical tool in reducing hunger and a key economic driver for Wisconsin’s agricultural sector, with more than $1 billion in benefits redeemed annually at local grocery retailers. Of course, there is a strong connection between food security and public health, highlighting the importance of stable nutrition assistance programs to support healthy communities and strengthen Wisconsin’s food system.

More information will continue to be shared. Please share with your legislators the attached (and below) press release or share in your networks.

You may also use this action alert from Feeding Wisconsin to share information about the current state.
Attendance High at Annual Conference Mentoring Discussion

About 70 people participated in the WPHA Retired Professionals (Retiree) Section sponsored “Bridging the Generations: Sharing Challenges and Opportunities for Successful Public Health Careers” breakout session at the WPHA Annual Conference, well
over what had been anticipated. Yvonne Greer moderated the session and led off the discussion with a keynote presentation on Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Public Health Trends. (link)
Then, Tim Ringhand, Carol Thornton, and Doug Mormann followed with a reactor panel, sharing their public health career journeys and lessons learned. The high attendance and thoughtful discussion questions poised speak to the important roll
WPHA members have in helping each other learn the skills of public health. We each are mentoring, whether we are aware of it or not, when our colleagues watch how we do things to improve the health of the public. And we in turn are mentees when
we learn how to improve our skills by watching our successful co-workers. Embracing lifelong learning was the take home message shared by all.

While the WPHA Mentor program has been on hold during this most trying time, WPHA membership is sharing experiences and providing significant guidance on how to be a success in public health.
