WPHA Incoming President's Message from David Pluymers

First, I am deeply honored to serve as the Wisconsin Public Health Association’s (WPHA) President in 2020. I am eager to advance our organization and, in alignment with our organizational values, will conduct myself with integrity, honesty and transparency in support of our Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Section and Committee Chairpersons and broad membership.

At its core, WPHA is about advocacy and education. We are here to advocate for our profession, for a healthier state and for health equity. Our educational efforts are intended to advance our members’ professional development, to build a skilled and sustainable public health workforce, and to educate and inform the public and decision makers.

At present, our organization is in a very good place. Our membership has grown to new levels, conference attendance has reached new heights and our financial health continues to improve. WPHA is also at an important inflection point – our membership is younger, more diverse and highly engaged. With our growth and success have come opportunities and the need to accept new challenges, define new processes and procedures, and find new ways to preserve and enhance the membership experience.

In 2020, I hope that we continue to build on:
• The organizational racial equity assessment that was conducted in 2019,
• A detailed and active legislative agenda that was developed by our joint Public Affairs Committee with the Wisconsin Association for Local Health Departments and Boards (WALHDAB), and
• The 2018 resolution that Racism is a Public Health Crisis to which 39 other organizations have now signed on in support.

My personal goal for WPHA in 2020 is that every member or anyone who wishes to join WPHA or participate in WPHA events feels welcomed, respected, valued and well-informed. Per our organizational values, WPHA strives to be diverse and inclusive in its membership and partnerships. WPHA is a community for public health professionals, our supporters and our partners. I hope that you all experience that sense of community and, if you wish to help shape and build this community, please don’t hesitate to contact a Board Member or check our website for information about WPHA’s committees, sections and how you can be more involved. During the year, I hope that you participate in our conferences, webinars and regional meetings.

Ultimately, WPHA is an organization that works to support our WPHA members and all public health professionals in Wisconsin. Please know that you are welcome to be an active and engaged part of our community and your efforts are greatly valued and appreciated.
