The Department of Health Services is getting a five-year, $1.8 million federal grant to improve maternal mental health in the state, according to a Tuesday statement.

The money from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will head to the Wisconsin Maternal Mortality Review Team.

State Health Officer Jeanne Ayers said that reviewing maternal deaths and pregnancy complications can lead to an understanding of how to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities.

“This grant allows us to zero in on new strategies that can make a difference for the health and well-being of women, their children and their communities," she said in a statement.

The team includes local health departments, the Wisconsin Perinatal Quality Collaborative, the Medicaid program and the Wisconsin section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
