As chair of the Oral Health Section of WPHA I’d like to share an update from my experience attending last week’s public hearing SB 89 to authorize Dental Therapists.

On Wednesday, August 22 the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services held a public hearing for Senate Bill 89 (SB89). This legislation would authorize dental therapist to practice in Wisconsin and it would expand access to oral health care. Dental therapists are providers who can fill cavities and perform simple extractions, so dentists can focus on more complex procedures.  Practices can use them to serve more patients, sending them to underserved areas and to schools, nursing homes and other locations to provide basic but critically needed care.

SB 89 is supported by over 62 organizations. The Wisconsin Public Health Association signed on in support of the bill. Matt Crespin, Associate Director of Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin, a WPHA Organizational and Individual Member, provided testimony in support and also Stacey Bisenius who is President of the Wisconsin Dental Hygienists Association and a WPHA member. In opposition to SB 89 is Marquette University and The Wisconsin Dental Association. Next step is for the committee to schedule a vote on the bill.

As the chair of the Oral Health Section of WPHA I am proud that WPHA  supported this legislation and will keep you informed any legislative progress. Pictured in the above photo are (from Left to Right): Rachael Henken, Jenna Linden, Matt Crespin, Rosie McGovern and Dana Fischer).
