WPHA Member Shailja Tiku is working towards Mrs. International 2019 - by setting her sights on breaking the stigma around mental health and improving care for those living with mental illness.

Read below her summary about her journey to Mrs. International 2019 - WPHA is proud to have a member like Shailja!

I am honored to be representing Wisconsin as the 2019 Mrs. Wisconsin International crown holder. I was born and raised in India and moved to the United States nearly fifteen years ago for my advanced education. I started my journey as a medical doctor but wanted to pursue more opportunities in health prevention. I received my master’s degree in public health from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and I am currently pursuing my doctorate in public health at the Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health, Milwaukee.

My passion for preventive medicine and mental health stems from my experiences as a Medical Doctor and a mother who wants to create a mentally safe world for my son. I have encountered some of the most life-changing experiences with my patients and not knowing how to help them through it, shifted my practice from treatment-based methods to preventative care. I believe that health is not just the absence of physical symptoms, but is a state of complete Physical, Mental, Emotional, Social, and Spiritual wellbeing. Furthermore, as someone who has struggled with anxiety (and managed it), mental health promotion is a topic very close to my heart. Mental health is an important and epidemic issue that we must rally against. As a researcher and practitioner, I am an advocate for preventative care measures and putting a foot forward in mental health education can help to decrease the concerning rates of secondary mental health outcomes such as suicides. I invite you to advocate and rally with me as I take a national platform to compete in the Mrs. International 2019 competition with this platform of MHAP “Mental Health Awareness and Promotion”
