May 2017 Legislative Update

On Wednesday, May 17, a public hearing was held in the Assembly Health Committee on Assembly Bill 293, the Local Health Protection Act. As members know, this initiative has been our number one priority for this legislative session. Although there is still much more work to be done, this is a very big first step to having this bill become law.

The bill authors earned co-sponsorship support from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and from across the state. Getting the bill to this point in the legislative process has truly been a team effort, and our grassroots, member-focused strategy continued at the public hearing. We were fortunate to have great representation from WPHA and WALHDAB with six members testifying in person and two members submitting written comments for the record.

The government affairs team at Hoven Consulting is also working on a budget motion to provide $2.5 million in funding to local health departments for communicable disease prevention. The motion would likely be offered on Thursday, May 25 when the Department of Health Services Public Health portion of the budget is heard. The language for the motion is identical to AB 293 and is half of a two-part strategy to secure funding for local health departments.
