This year’s theme is “Working Collectively to Modernize Public Health Practice.” Conference activities will provide attendees with information, skills, and resources to help public health staff continue to improve Wisconsin’s health by:

  • Identifying the benefits of public health workforce diversity and how it can positively affect population health by bridging the past with the future.
  • Describing the evolution of public health practice and what skills are necessary in the workforce to meet the needs of contemporary practice.
  • Recognizing collaborative practices among public health staff and community partners that enhance the delivery of essential public health services.
  • Developing a personal and agency plan to foster professional growth and strengthen individual and collective talents to enrich public health practice.

Pre-Conference Session - StrengthsFinder Workshop
Tuesday, August 8 • 1:00-4:30 p.m.

The conference planning committee is pleased to bring you a skill building experience based on Amazon's beast selling nonfiction book of all time, StrengthsFinder 2.0.  This session will take attendees through their identified top 5 strengths and will provide real examples of how knowledge of these strengths has improved work in local health departments and within individual teams.  Learn how your dominant talents help you excel, and begin your path to better performance and higher engagement. Intended as an introduction to strengths, this solution is ideal for people who want a quick, focused approach to strengths-based development.  Registration for this session will also include a copy of the StrengthsFinder 2.0 book that will be available onsite for attendees.  PLEASE NOTE:  To get the most out of this session, we do ask that all attendees complete the online assessment prior to the conference to discover your top 5 strengths.  You will receive an access code to complete this assessment once your registration for the event is received by the WPHA office.  Complete the assessment by July 21 in order to share your strengths with our facilitators.  The WPHA office will follow-up to collect your strengths as the report will be sent to you directly.

Featured Keynote Presentations:

Wednesday, August 9 • 9:15-10:15 a.m.
Keynote Presentation: Foundational Public Health Services Framework

Susan Zahner, DrPH, MPH, RN- University of Wisconsin-Madison

Public health practice continues to adapt to incorporate new evidence to address emerging and ongoing population health needs. This adaptation is occurring in the midst of the puzzle of fiscal challenges and evolving frameworks defining public and population health service delivery. This presentation will help public health nurses make sense of contemporary frameworks, including the Foundational Public Health Services Framework and the Determinants of Population Health, that are driving public health practice and health care system improvement efforts. Public health nurses will also gain an appreciation for the skill-set required for practice using these frameworks, including finding, understanding, and using evidence; functioning through inter-professional teams; and partnering with communities across organizational boundaries.

Wednesday, August 9 • 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Keynote Presentation: Intimate Partner Violence - A Cry for Community Support
Susan Perry, Author – From Beneath the Tarp

A current overview of Wisconsin domestic violence statistics will be offered including a brief review of the Governor's Council "Long Range Plan for a Safe Wisconsin". Because the Public Health workforce is critical in assisting with the identification of victims, strategies and "red flags" will be identified.  Glimpses of a person story will be reflective of the magnitude of this social injustice.
