Community water fluoridation (CWF) is an evidence based method for the prevention of dental caries that has improved the oral health of Wisconsin residents since 1946. Wisconsin has had great success with CWF and has surpassed the Healthy People 2020 objective with almost 90% of the population on a public water supply having access to optimally fluoridated water.

Despite the overwhelming scientific evidence that supports the benefits and safety, opposition to CWF still persists. The opposition is well organized and has developed strategies that are effective at dispensing misinformation. Unfortunately, much of the oral and public health workforce are unaware of the opposition to CWF or feel unprepared to provide education on the public health benefits of CWF.

Learn from Robbyn Kuester, RDH, BSDH: Sealant and Fluoridation Program Coordinator at Wisconsin Department of Health Services and Matt Crespin, MPH, RDH: Associate Director of Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin, as they educate on the evidence and science of CWF. Additionally, the session will provide attendees examples of the type of myths spread by those opposed to CWF and how to respond.
