Webinar Summary: Dr. Lindsay Emer is a public health researcher who works on violence prevention in collaboration with public health, service provider, law enforcement, criminal justice and healthcare partners in Milwaukee.  Her more recent research has focused on gun violence.  In her presentation, she will give an overview of gun violence as a public health issue in Wisconsin and provide examples of research as well as community-led efforts to prevent gun violence.  The presentation will close with a discussion of the challenges to gun violence research and potential strategies to overcome these challenges.


Dr. Lindsay Emer, Medical College of WI is a Program Manager with the Institute for Health and Equity at the Medical College of Wisconsin.  In her role, she provides training and technical assistance for Sexual Assault Reviews (Department of Justice grant) and Opioid Overdose Death Reviews (Center for Disease Control and Prevention grant) across Wisconsin.  Dr. Emer has a PhD in Public Health and has worked as a researcher in HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, sexual assault and firearm violence.  Before joining MCW, she facilitated the Milwaukee Sexual Assault Review and Milwaukee Domestic Violence Review for Aurora Health Care in partnership with the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission.  Before entering graduate school, she worked in the community for six years at the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin and Meta House, a substance abuse treatment center for women.
