This past September, 21 WI HealthCorps members were welcomed at their non-profit host sites to serve for one year. Special thank you to the WPHA Organization Members for hosting a WI HealthCorps member: Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin, Eau Claire City-County Health Department, and Winnebago County Health Department

WI HealthCorps Members were asked to share an update on what they have been up to since the start of their service year:

Sarahjean Schluechtermann – Winnebago County Health Department

One of the projects I have been working on is educating high school and college students about sexually transmitted infections. I have also spent some time working on communicable disease reports for providers as well as surveillance reports for Winnebago County schools to provide information on the illness rates of the students.

Stephanie Luedtke – Winnebago County Health Department

At the health department, I have been working with both mental health and healthy lifespan. For mental health, I go to a local high school and carry out a wellness screen that asks students about their health, feelings, and behaviors. Depending on student’s answers, they may meet with a counselor and will possibly be referred to a counseling service. My work in healthy lifespan is about making Winnebago County a better place to live for aging adults. We are looking at the county as a whole and how we can make it more inclusive for this population. We also manage fitness classes to help prevent falls and increase strength.

Tae-In Lee – Winnebago County Health Department

At the health department, I work closely with the re:TH!NK coordinators on prevention of substance use and promotion of active and connected communities as well as healthy foods. I attend coalition meetings to collaborate with other community workers on these issues. My experience thus far has been as fulfilling as it has been didactic, and I’m truly blessed to be working with the most passionate and dedicated public health workers.

Kaylee Lyons, CHES - Eau Claire City-County Health Department

At the Eau Claire City-County Health Department I have been focused on outreach and health equity.  The outreach has mostly been with the Family Planning Clinic and WIC.  For health equity I am currently researching best practices and examples of how a health department like Eau Claire can best incorporate it into the services provided.

WPHA collaborates with the Wisconsin Primary Health Care Association (WPHCA) on Wisconsin HealthCorps. Wisconsin HealthCorps is a program of AmeriCorps, a national program, implemented locally, that engages individuals ("members”) in a year of service (Approx. 1700 hours) to address pressing community problems. Wisconsin HealthCorps members are placed at federally qualified community health centers, health departments, and non-profit agencies across the state.
