Bill provides more funding to fight disease

A bill backed by local health departments would provide them with more funding to prevent and respond to communicable diseases.

The legislation, circulated by Rep. Paul Tittl, R-Manitowoc, and Sen. Luther Olsen, R-Ripon, would provide $2.5 million over the next biennium to improve disease surveillance and investigation. It will also provide additional funding for prevention, staff training and public awareness.

The bill has the support of the Wisconsin Public Health Association and the Wisconsin Association of Local Health Departments and Boards.

"It is time to invest in prevention because our local health departments simply need additional resources to fight communicable diseases," said Linda Conlon, Oneida County Health Department director. "Our residents deserve it and Wisconsin's health depends on it."
