Ending a Mentor-Mentee Relationship
  • If it is clear after a few meetings that this relationship will not be mutually beneficial, either party may invoke the “no-fault ending” document that was originally agreed upon. If possible, it would be beneficial to have a conversation about the ending, so that future relationships can be better informed.
  • At the end of the initially-identified time period, review the progress on the identified goals. If they are all met, the formal relationship can end. If there is still progress to be made on goals, it is up to the mentee and mentor to determine whether and how to continue.
  • Share your comments with each other as to what worked and what didn’t work in the relationship. This will provide the opportunity for improvement for both mentor and mentee.
  • WPHA staff would like to participate in any de-briefing at the conclusion of a relationship, whether the conclusion is at the expected time or is premature.  This would be a phone conference call lasting about 15-30 minutes.
