". . . 40 to 44 million Americans, or approximately one quarter of the US population, are functionally illiterate, and another 50 million have marginal literacy skills."

— JAMA, February 10, 1999 - Vol 281, No 6

Welcome

The Wisconsin Public Health Association, in partnership with the Division of Public Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine are working towards development of a Center for Health Marketing and Communication.  This activity is supported through a Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program planning grant.

The partners primary goal is to convene public health system and other stakeholders to develop a plan to establish a Wisconsin Center for Health Marketing and Communication. The Center will serve as a multimedia communications resource for health marketing and public health communications.

The need for this project is sizeable. The US spends twice as much as the rest of the developed world does on health care, and yet profound health disparities exist. Our country has expanding epidemics of chronic disease, which are largely preventable. And while the causes are many, health illiteracy, poor health communication, and inadequate health marketing are important root causes of health disparity, high health costs, medical errors, inadequate access to care, and lost prevention opportunities.
